Circulating histone H3 levels are associated with fatal outcome. Serum histone H3 levels, cell-free DNA (cfDNA) levels, CRP levels, and white blood cell (WBC) counts on days 1, 3, 5, and 7 were analyzed. Patients who left the ICU were not followed up even if they survived. Differences between 28-day survivors and non-survivors were analyzed by the Mann–Whitney U test. *p < 0.05
